Addiction and substance use care in Delhi and online

Alcohol, cannabis, nicotine, painkillers or other drugs can slowly move from habit to need. Addiction is a health condition, not a moral failing, and it can be treated.

Dr. Aditya VohraMBBS, MD (Psychiatry), Psychiatrist in New Delhi

Dr. Aditya Vohra has worked in addiction psychiatry at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College and Safdarjung Hospital, and attended a workshop on the management of substance use disorders at the National Drug Dependence Treatment Centre, AIIMS New Delhi.

Common signs

  • Using more, or for longer, than you meant to
  • Wanting to cut down but not managing to
  • Cravings or strong urges to use
  • Shakiness, sweating, poor sleep or irritability when you stop
  • Problems at work, at home or with money because of use
  • Giving up activities you used to enjoy
  • Family members worried about your use

When to see a psychiatrist

See a psychiatrist if you have tried to cut down and could not, if you have withdrawal symptoms, or if your family is worried. After heavy drinking, stopping suddenly can be dangerous, so get medical advice before you stop.

In danger right now? Call 112, or Tele-MANAS on 14416. Outside India, call your local emergency number.

How he can help

Care is confidential and without judgment. It can include a safe, supervised plan to stop or cut down, medicines that ease withdrawal and reduce cravings, counselling, and support for the family.

  1. 1

    Ask for a time

Fill in the short form below, or call or write. Say whether you would like to meet online or in person, and how soon.

  2. 2

    Confirm the slot

The clinic team confirms a time and tells you the fee before anything is fixed.

  3. 3

    First consultation

An unhurried conversation about what is happening, how long it has been going on and what you want to change. Bring any earlier prescriptions or reports.

  4. 4

    A plan you understand

Together we agree on next steps. That can combine medicine, therapy with a psychologist and regular follow-up, explained in plain words.

In person or online

Timings: Monday to Saturday, 9 am to 9 pm IST, by appointment. Closed on Sundays.

Questions

Can my family come to the consultation?

Yes. Families often notice the problem first, and their support helps recovery. Family members can also come on their own for guidance on how to help.

Is it safe to stop alcohol on my own?

After long or heavy drinking, stopping suddenly can cause serious withdrawal. Speak to a doctor first, so that stopping can be planned safely.
